Pavel Muller, Ph.D. (Resume - PDF), has over 25 years of experience in pharmacology, toxicology and risk assessment. He obtained his M.Sc. and Ph.D. in pharmacology at the University of Toronto. He has worked as Department Head of Neurochemistry / Neurotoxicology for Bio-Research laboratories in Montreal, where he developed a method for screening for toxicants affecting brain function. As a senior toxicologist and risk assessor, he spent over 12 years with the Ontario Ministry of the Environment (MOE) and conducted risk assessments, chaired MOE risk assessment committee, worked with internal clients on management of environmental problems, and helped in the development of new environmental standards.

A major part of Dr. Muller's work for the government involved evaluation of submissions of site-specific risk assessments (SSRAs) from the private sector, as a result he is very familiar with the process by which government officials evaluate communications, and thus well suited to prepare effective submissions.

Dr. Muller is an international expert on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) has recently invited him to join a group of international experts in developing potency estimates for PAHs. As a starting point, USEPA selected a report authored primarily by him that was published by MOE in 1997. At the invitation of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr. Muller assessed PAHs as a member of the international working group in Hanover, Germany. In addition, he was the primary author of a WHO publication on risk assessment of PAHs, which was used in developing air guidelines for PAHs.

Since Dr. Muller founded ToxProbe Inc. in 1998, the company has completed reports involving assessments of environmental and occupational contaminants on human health, on contract from engineering, industrial and law firms,. Dr. Muller also provided services to governmental and quasi-governmental institutions in Canada and abroad, including the USEPA, the WHO the Czech Ministry of the Environment, the Czech Academy of Sciences, Ontario Ministry of the Environment, he City of Toronto and other municipalities. Although Dr. Muller specializes in complex mixtures of organic contaminants (PAHs, TPHs, PCBs), he has served as consultant on toxicity of metals (e.g. nickel and arsenic) and has experience with all of the common environmental contaminants. Dr. Muller has a long-standing interest in the use of risk assessment as a planning and prioritizing tool and ToxProbe Inc. has been providing support to its clients in this area.
